Exercising In Our New Home
Despite all my years I still feel like a little boy inside. I have a hard time looking in the mirror and recognizing a fully realized adult. I might have believed the birth of my second child would have changed it, yet I still appear to be in self-denial of the aging process.
In regards to aging — or rather putting it off — my dear wife and I moved into a new home and this home possesses room in its basement for a home gym my dear wfe has always wanted. I’m seeing dollar signs when I brainstorm the many small and big items necessary, from the essential but oft-neglected benches for weight-lifting and exercise mats to determining the most versatile stationary bike. A stationary bike can be tricky now a days. Do you go with a recumbent or an upright stationary bike? Should I go with a digital or old-school analog?
Of course, my wife appears determined to get one of those elliptical machines too. Yes you understood that correctly. An exercise bike and an elliptical machine — not just one or the other. My guess is that the extra exercise equipment will go with the stretch mark cream she began using after the birth of youngest child. Oh boy I’m gonna get it for that jest.
I have to be particular with the budget because our new home is more of a diamond in the rough. We wanted it to be this way, but we still must cautiously budget everything, down to the cabinet knobs (I’m not jesting). My dear wife has an ambitious kitchen cabinet refacing design projected, but I have to remind her the bathroom sink she desires installed will cost a pretty penny, too.
Thankfully, we both like the rustic, natural look, so we’re furnishing our new home with unfinished furniture. It still needs a little finishing, but we can keep the expenses down and make better furniture than we might purchase in any store. I uncovered a great pair of coffee tables with some decent, raw knotting and a console table in matching cedar.
And then there’s the great outdoors. For our patio we are considering outside fireplaces and we’ll furnish with a little inexpensive wicker furniture to start.
Furnishing a brand new home may appear so mature, but I can’t help but feel like I am merely playing house. The new furniture and exercise equipment just feel like a new generation of toys.
