I was born in Scotland and later married there I have a real love of Scotlands countryside. The quote Absence makes the heart grow fonder is a phrase I fully empathise with and it wasn’t until later that I was searching about our areas gallery that I saw the paintings of Gillian McDonald a painter that is truly gifted in capturing the feel of beautiful countryside.
Her beautiful pictures are amazing capturing the nature of the landscape but nestle in structures that have a safety and solitude which provides the feel of untouched regions. Gillian McDonald learnt her art at the London college of art but developed her joy for the medium of water colour in Indonesia. She is known for her fantastic use of colour which really deepens the feel of the scene she is attempting to portray.
It was lovely to see the beautiful peaks of Ben More in the background with homesteads placed in the warm and sweeping landscape spread out before it. I love the fact that in Gillian McDonalds paintings you frequently find detail in a flower or blade of grass that ties In brilliantly with other parts of the picture. I believe that Gillian McDonald herself is an avid gardener and walker, often roaming different parts of the country searching for her next picture to paint.
I believe Gillian McDonald now lives in Wales where she produces her work concentrating on her water colours and painting pieces that are loved the planet over.
